BSEC-EU: TOWARDS ENHANCED RELATIONS
On the 25th of June the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organization (BSEC) celebrated its fourteenth anniversary. Today the Organization with twelve Member States is representing a region of 350 million people with a foreign trade capacity of over USD 300 billion annually. The organization is currently working on the Black Sea Ring Highway or the “Road of the Argonauts”, a 7.100 km. project circling the Black Sea that when implemented will bring about further economic development in the region by facilitating trade and tourism. The BSEC Ministerial Council that was held in Chisinau on 28 October 2005, mandated Greece to start consultations with the EU with a view to the adoption of a Declaration by the EU Council on the enhancement of relations between the two sides. Since then the issue has been discussed in the relevant Working Group of the Council of Ministers but with no concrete result up to now. It is important to underline that BSEC prefers to have enhanced relations with the EU rather than any other entity aspiring to influence the region.
